The Partners in Health Sciences (PIHS) program was born in 1991 when the Dean of the College of Medicine, I. Dodd Wilson, M.D. (currently UAMS Chancellor) asked E. Robert Burns, Ph.D., Professor, Department of Neurobiology and Developmental Sciences to get UAMS involved in K-12 health science education statewide. Until 1997 the PIHS program was funded by grants from the office of the Dean of Medicine (I. Dodd Wilson, M.D.), office of the UAMS Chancellor (Harry P. Ward, M.D.), Eisenhower Mathematics and Science grants from the Arkansas Department of Higher Education, UAMS Office of Regional Programs and The Kellogg Foundation.

From 1997-2003 the PIHS program was funded by a Science Education Partnership Award (SEPA) from the National Center for Research Resources, National Institutes of Health (grant number R25RR12346). The NIH-SEPA program is designed to improve life science literacy throughout the Nation. The funding brings together biomedical and behavioral researchers, educators, community groups, and other interested organizations in partnerships to create and disseminate programs that give K-12 students and teachers and the general public a better understanding of life science.
